I think you're right, Feeank. Snyder probably would have felt ridiculous getting an "R" rating for a few inches of blue meat. Personally, I think going that particular route would have.. ahem ...exposed one of the hypocrisies of the ratings system. If cartoonish violence is acceptable, why not a cartoonish...

my take on it is that, faced with a hard R because of the neutron-powered schlong jumping around most of the movie, Snider decided to earn the rating for a reason he felt valid, hence five minute sex scene, cantaloupe head, arms sawn off, knife to the throat, etc etc.

I couldn't agree more, Dan.

Dan's sexuality is an important part of his psyche. He has been, we might assume, impotent since the Keene Act... and really, who was he with before that? Who knew he was Nite Owl? I think the highlight of his sexual existence involved holding up that picture of the Twilight Lady with one hand.

So you have a guy who has found a girl willing to share if not embrace his odd costume kink. He's going to go apeshit... empowered......

I'm with you, Dan. I thought that the couch scene was rushed and had no reasonable build-up, while the sex in the Owlship was pretty ridiculous. I mean, seeing Malin naked is nothing to complain about, but let's be a succinct sexy, yah?

The flamethrower was a nicely timed touch- the crowd loved it at my viewing.

I was left with the impression that Mssr Snyder was trying to out action the action flick, taking it where no geek has taken it before. The violence was more slasher noir than anything. Again, I feel that all the time he spent making gooey kablooeys would have been better spent telling the story.

The sex scene in Archie is another example. We see five minutes of (not really great) cinematic humping when a really hot kiss followed by the Owlship's flame thrower going...

I believe that Rorschach's transformation could have very easily stayed with the burning of the dress shop and Grice inside. "Watched it burn for an hour. Nobody got out. Felt cleansed... etc.". The fire takes Grice, not Rorschach.

And as cool as some of that alleyway ass-kicking that Laurie and Dan do; they are heroes, not terminators. Knives through the throat seem very uncharacteristic. Having a hero take a life should be left to the amoral Eddie or the...

Saw this yesterday and felt that the scene, though gratuitous in its presentation showed Kovacs in agony as to whether he should let Rorschach loose on the culprit, or hold back.

Rorschach won. Dramatic, and less quiet than in the novel.

I want to know why the movie didn't grab me the way I thought it would. I have read novels before and seen the cinematic versions and have had other experiences than the one I had yesterday. My main feeling was that it...

I thought the same at first (Grice's cantaloupe head), Dan, but then considered that going the original route would be un-original in movie-terms, after all the Saw and hostels and such. I didn't like it much, but can see why it was changed, which is not much comfort.

Cool. I loved the novel for being rather subtle about the gun. You have to go back and look for it. I like that the movie took the same approach... but she wasn't carrying the shopping bag...

Good review. Thorough. I have yet to reconcile everything into a proper review.
